Essential Responsibilities

Performs, on a very independent basis, all phases of experimental investigations, to include being responsible to the Principal Investigator in the planning, developing, operating, recording, collaborating and reporting of major projects.
Collaborates with Principal Investigators and senior researchers in the progress of major research projects.
Provides guidance to laboratory staff in one or more laboratory areas, including technicians, support and auxiliary staff. Performs as the technical advisor on techniques involving complex analyses utilizing highly sophisticated techniques. Serves as primary contact with researcher staff for technical services on major techniques, recording devices and statistical procedures relative to the specifically assigned field.
Reviews quality control of new or modified laboratory techniques which affect any part of major projects.
Conducting metabolomics experiments using mass spectrometry including sample preparation, mass spectrometry, and data analysis, on cultured cell lines, primary cells, and biofluids.
Performing bioinformatics studies, including network analysis, with a focus on metabolomics.
Installing and maintaining software programs as they relate to research projects.
Performing method development on a variety of biological and clinical assays.
Attending educational courses/seminars at outside institutions as they relate to specific proteomic/mass spectrometry techniques.
Performing experiments as related to the research of Dr. Nichole Reisdorph.
Preparation of research manuscripts and research presentations and assistance with grant submission.
Performs all other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills
Extensive knowledge of standard research practices and methods, particularly in the field of assignment, and of other values of research in the field involved. Ability to determine the approach to a research problem which will give the most significant results and to develop, lay out and plan the actual experiments to be performed, and ability to devise new methods and techniques as needed in experimentation. Ability to plan, organize and direct work of supporting personnel. Ability to prepare and write reports on research projects. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, other research personnel and the general public.

Education

Ph. D. in biology, chemistry or other basic sciences required.

Certification and Licensure: None

Work Experience

Five years of specified experience in technical investigatory techniques required. M. D. or Ph. D. in a specified basic science field will suffice for 2 yrs experience. Minimum 2 years of experience with mass spectrometers and related software required. Experience with metabolomics, bioinformatics, and pathway analysis preferred. Experience and salary are rated according to the NIH scale.

Three positions available at Agilent Technologies

Susan Moyer from Agilent asked me to post this regarding 3 open LCMS positions at Agilent.

Two of the positions are for LC/MS applications scientists in our Santa Clara Center of Excellence. One of the positions will specialize in metabolomics and our mass profiler professional (MPP) software for pathways analysis. Background in adjacent technologies (GC/MS, NMR, etc.) and statistical analysis is also a plus for this position. The second position is for someone to do small molecule qualitative and quantitative analysis. For this position, a background in high resolution mass spectrometry would certainly be a plus.

We have a third position for a post-doctoral fellowship for an Agilent Metabolomics Center of Excellence that we are building in conjunction with Johns Hopkins School of Public Health on the campus of JHMI. For this position, we are looking for someone with a solid LC/MS background. Again, background in adjacent metabolomics technologies and statistical analysis are a plus.

For all three of these positions, the candidates would have to already have the right to work in the US and would be available to start work in the next 2-3 months.

Research Scientist – Central Analytical Facility, Univ. Colorado at Boulder

The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at the University of Colorado, Boulder seeks a talented Research Scientist to help lead the Central Analytical Laboratory-Mass Spectrometry Facility. The main task of the position is to provide services for small molecule analysis by LC, LC/MS and GC/MS to support research by faculty investigators, postdocs, and students at the University of Colorado. Expert knowledge of mass spectrometry instrument operation, mass spectral data analysis, gas phase chemistry, and organic chemistry is required. The position will also support students and faculty in experiment and project design, train students in instrument use, maintain facility instruments and infrastructure, and perform accounting for facility revenue. Requirements: BA/BS, MS or PhD degree with training in analytical chemistry or equivalent; technical proficiency and experience with LC and mass spectrometry.
